Those who enjoy the game of poker understand that there are various aspects of the game that can sometimes take years to learn. Some of those aspects are simple, while others may take a while to master. You can go a long way in avoiding making the same mistakes, over and over, if you learn the steps that we’ll be presenting here. These steps are perfect for beginners, but many experienced players can benefit from them, as well. We’ll be referring to the game known as Five-Card Draw, however, the general strategies and psychology will apply to any version of poker.
Difficulty: Challenging
Items needed: One or more playing partners, a deck of cards, poker chips (or cash) and a deck of cards.
Strategy Instructions:
Step 1
First of all, you need to know the rankings and probabilities of the possible hands in poker. This knowledge will be used in conjunction with the psychological techniques mentioned later.
The best possible hand is known as a “royal flush” and consists of consecutive cards, of the same suit, beginning with the Ace. Just below that is a “straight flush”. This hand consists of consecutive cards of the same suit but will start with the King or below. The remaining hands (in descending order of value) are: four of a kind, a full house (three matching cards combined with a pair), a flush (all cards of the same suit – but not in consecutive order), a straight (all cards in consecutive order – with different suits), three of a kind, two pair and then one pair. The number of possible combinations in poker is approximately 2.5 million. The likelihood of you being dealt a pair is about 42%. For a straight flush, you’re looking at.0015%.
